GREGOR MENDEL – THE FATHER OF GENETICS

Gregor Johann Mendel was born on July 20, 1822, in Heinzendorf, in the Austrian Empire. He grew up in a poor farming family. His parents were Anton Mendel and Rosine Mendel. Mendel was the second child and hi had two sisters, Veronica and Theresia. From an early age, Gregor showed great interest in nature and plants.

Mendel went to school in his hometown and later studied at the University of Olomouc. However, his family had financial difficulties, so he entered the Augustinian monastery in Czech Republic in 1843. He  became a monk and took the name Gregor.

At the monastery, Mendel continued his studies. He studied science, mathematics, and agriculture. He became especially interested in plants and heredity.

Between 1856 and 1863, Mendel carried out important experiments with pea plants. He observed different characteristics, such as the color and shape of the seeds and the color of the flowers. He crossed different pea plants and carefully recorded the results.

After many experiments, Mendel discovered important patterns in the way characteristics passed from parents to their offspring. His work helped scientists understand how traits were inherited. He developed important ideas that later became known as Mendel's Laws of Inheritance.

In 1865, Mendel presented his results to the Natural Science Society in Brno. However, scientists at that time did not recognize the importance of his work.

Mendel continued his religious and scientific activities. In 1868, he became the abbot of his monastery. He died on January 6, 1884, he was buried in the Augustinian tomb in Brno.

Many years after his death, scientists rediscovered Mendel's work. His experiments became an important foundation for modern genetics. Today, Gregor Mendel is remembered as the Father of Genetics.
